Growing calls for term ‘Coloured’ to be scrapped

Reading Time: < 1 minute
There are increasing calls for the term ‘Coloured’ to be abolished. Parliament’s Select Committee on Petitions and Executive Undertakings will, on Thursday, consider a petition calling for the removal of the use of the word “Coloured” from all official government forms, private institutions and the Employment Equity Act.
The organisation, People against Racial Classification (PARC) representative Glen Snyman says the word is confusing, derogatory, racist and conceals the true historical identity of the Khoi and San people.
He has called on the government to scrap the word “Coloured.” “What we are proposing to parliament is that they should get rid of this word, stemming from the old apartheid definitions. It’s inhumane and very disrespectful to refer to certain people still called coloured. Coloured means mix and we ask we are mixed with what. If the government doesn’t hear us we will always identify ourselves the way we feel like doing.”
