Greed, corruption continue to kill the ANC: Mtintso

Reading Time: 2 minutes

South African Ambassador to Spain, Thenjiwe Mtintso, says greed and corruption continue to kill the African National Congress (ANC).

Mtintso was speaking during the 60 years celebrations of Umkhonto Wesizwe hosted by the ANC’s Nelson Mandela Bay region at the Heroes-Acre Zwide Cemetery.

The ANC’s military wing was formed on the 16th of December 1961.

The former Umkhonto Wesizwe Commander says people join the ANC for their own selfish interest and this is why the party lost power in some of the municipalities.

“We had a lot of members of the population joining the ANC but not for the interest of the people but for their own interest.

But additional even those of us who have been in the ANC before we began to see the ANC as something we can benefit from so we began to lose our political consciousness and in that way factionalism began to grow. Greedy and corruption began to grow.”

On Saturday former President Thabo Mbeki lamented the ANC’s performance and decline in the 2021 Local Government Elections.

Mbeki was delivering the annual Chief Albert Luthuli Lecture on Friday.

ANC leaders must come up with a clear roadmap on the renewal of the party: Mbeki

The governing party dipped below 50% on the November 1 elections and subsequently lost power in Gauteng’s three metros. This led to the Democratic Alliance (DA) mayoral candidates ascending to the mayoralty in the City of Johannesburg, Tshwane and Ekurhuleni.
