South Africa has moved down to Lockdown Alert Level 1. The country went into lockdown in March 2020 amid the outbreak of the global novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.
The different lockdown levels, which run from Level 5 to Level 1 restrict the movement of people and the operation of different sectors as a means to curb the spread.
Level 5 saw the strictest restrictions and Level 1 is expected to have more relaxed restrictions.
The South African government adjusted lockdown regulations based on factors which include the rate of infections, readiness to deal with COVID-19 cases in the country, as well as economic conditions.
