Grape farmers worried that borehole water not sufficient

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Grape farmers on the West Coast say they are worried that borehole water may not be enough to fight the effects of the drought.

Some have been forced to reduce the size of their vineyards to keep their businesses afloat.

A project to raise the wall of the Clanwilliam Dam, one of the largest in the province, has also been stopped due to money shortages.

Farmer Anton Bergh says the dam’s increased capacity will drastically improve water supply in the region.

“This dam could have been paid off by now, if you drive through Clanwilliam you’ll see there’s quite a bit of development going on. Two new malls are being built, new developments all based on agriculture, and if we have another two years of drought, then it will be catastrophic especially for the poor people.”
