Grade 6 learner from Refalotse Primary School dies during school trip

A Grade 6 learner from Refalotse Primary School in Winterveld, north of Pretoria died during a school trip last Friday.

The Gauteng Department of Education says the learner drowned while swimming in a pool with fellow learners.

Educators are reported to have immediately removed the learner from the swimming pool and tried to resuscitate him.

The learner was certified dead by paramedics upon their arrival.

Department Spokesperson Steve Mabona says: “Gauteng Education MEC Matome Chiloane is deeply saddened to have learned about an incident that took place on Friday 2 December 2022, where a Grade 6 boy learner from Refalotse Primary School in Winterveld, Tshwane passed away during a school trip. Police are investigating circumstances surrounding this incident. MEC Chiloane is deeply saddened by the sudden passing of one of our learners. We extend our deepest condolences to the learner’s family and the school community at large.”
