Govt option of dealing with carbon emissions under fire

Reading Time: < 1 minute

One of government’s options to deal with carbon dioxide emissions, capturing and storing them has come under fire from environmental organisations. More than 90% of South Africa’s power is generated through coal-fired power stations, resulting in the release of more than 400 million tonnes of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere each year. Researchers say capturing gasses and storing them deep underground would help reduce carbon emissions. However, Ferrial Adam of Greenpeace Africa told Parliament that the method of Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) is still in the research phase and could take several years before it’s proved to be viable. “If we have money let’s put it into renewable energy, it’s been proven, it’s not in research phase.”
