Gauteng Premier David Makhura has challenged everyone in government to ensure that every citizen lives a dignified life.

Makhura says government should empower people and do away with poverty.

He says people are not free until they have achieved economic freedom in their lifetime.

Makhura has been addressing hundreds of people at the Khutsong Stadium in Carletonville, on Gauteng’s West Rand as part of the 24th Freedom Day celebrations.

The celebrations were also used to honour the legacy of the former President, Nelson Mandela as part of his centenary celebrations.

“The greatest challenge is that we must ensure that we empower our citizens. Our citizens must have the means to live the kind of life that the constitution espouses. The first task of those of us who are in government is to deliver on the mandate of the constitution of the republic of South Africa.”
