Reading Time: < 1 minute

Government will use the World Economic Forum (WEF) to continue to re-inforce the message that foreign nationals from other parts of the continent are welcome in South Africa.

The WEF on Africa meeting is one of the first major international events to be held in South Africa following the spate of xenophobic attacks in April.

Speaking to the SABC, International Relations Minister Maite Nkoana-Mashabane says the message will continue when the government hosts the African Union heads of state summit next week.

She says they have explained to countries that Pretoria’s foreign policy is premised on the principles of Ubuntu.

“People always feel safe and welcomed in SA and it will continue like that,” emphasized Nkoana-Mashabane.

The minister has heaped praise on the manner in which these incidents we dealt with.

“While people were disappointed with the Xenophobia incident, they praised (President) Zuma for dealing with this speedily….. So we are working in action to say to our African brothers and sisters that this is your home.”
