The government conference on technology in Durban has been a success and has achieved its desired goals. So says State Information Technology Agency CEO Dr Setumo Mohapi.

Mohapi says the aim of the conference was to explore new technological innovations that can shape and speed up government service delivery. The three-day conference was also a platform for small business enterprises, IT learners and experts to share their knowledge and ways of developing technological world.

This year’s Government technology conference created a space to accelerate the growth journey not only business but people’s lives through technology. That’s according to State Information Technology Agency CEO Dr Setumo Mohapi.

Setumo says they have explored the potential of technology in promoting public service delivery.

“So after this GovTech, we will choose three district municipalities where we are going to make an intervention together with Cogta at the national level, also Salga and my promise is that we are going to save these municipalities money for better service delivery and direct service delivery. We will be able to showcase how we are going to save those municipalities money through a concept of shared services. Let’s make a better use of the IT and save money and deliver basic services.”

Mohapi says the conference was aimed at demonstrating how the smart and effective use of technology can bring shape and the smooth functioning of public institutions.

“For the first time, we have Hachathon which is a software development teams. We put together, included young people, Grade 10 and 11 and college people and government employees … they did well. They gave their views and solutions.”

Technology wizard Nokulunga Mashego has facilitated a group that came up with software applications which will help trace the missing children.

Mashego says the application can play a role in preventing human trafficking.

“We’re basically coding a system to assist with missing children, particularly children who are school goers so we have come up with an application that can assist teachers as well as parents to locate kids once they are outside the radar between the  school and their houses. So, we thought this can assist society and Department of Education.”

Delegates, who attended the Government Technology Conference popularly known as GovTech, believe the conference spared no efforts in bringing about another event of highest calibre and standard in new technological innovations.
