Government has condemned the killing of two police officers and two civilian women during a suspected ambush in Reiger Park, East Rand on Friday night.

The police officers were part of a crime prevention team conducting patrols in the area.

They were allegedly ambushed after responding to gunshots while they were patrolling Reiger Park.

Ekurhuleni mayor Nkosiphendile Xhakaza is expected to visit the bereaved families this afternoon to convey his condolences and offer support.

Deputy Government spokesperson William Baloyi has called on the Reiger Park community to work with the police by providing information that can lead to the arrest of the perpetrators.

Baloyi says, “The killing of law enforcement officers who dedicate their lives to protecting communities is an attack not only on the individuals concerned, but also on the authority of the State and the rule of law.”

“Government will not allow criminal elements and gangs to undermine the ability of law enforcement to protect communities and uphold the law. Every effort will be made to ensure that those behind this attack are brought to justice and face the full might of the law.”

He adds, Government extends its deepest condolences to the families, colleagues and loved ones of those who lost their lives in the line of duty.”
