Government has called on communities across the country to intensify their participation in Community Policing Forums (CPF) to help combat crime and violence.
The call follows a shooting incident in Reiger Park, East of Johannesburg on Friday night. The incident claimed four lives, including two police officers and two women. The officers were part of a crime prevention team conducting patrols in the area. They were allegedly ambushed after responding to reports of gunfire while patrolling Reiger Park.
Deputy Government Spokesperson, William Baloyi says eradicating crime and violence needs collaboration between communities and law enforcement agencies, “Communities have a very vital role to play in reclaiming their neighborhoods from all the social ills. Hence, we are taking the issue of community policing forum very serious. We are taking the issue of making sure that you have sustained interaction of the communities and law enforcement. Even today, the acting police minister will be visiting Reiger Park with an emphasis on the issue of the communities working very closely with the law enforcement agencies.”
