Government’s plan to fix SA’s power crisis lacks feasibility detail: Expert

Energy analyst, Prof Sampson Mamphweli says government’s plan to fix the country’s power crisis lacks a feasibility detail.

The Minister of Electricity, Dr Kgosientso Ramokgopa has announced that he intends to introduce emergency solutions to protect national key points from power cuts.

Mamphweli from the South African National Energy Development Institute says this may just be a promise

“The question is whether there is a proper study that has been done to look at what are those national key points, how many are they, what would be the impact on the grid if they are not included in rolling blackouts. That could mean that instead for instance of having Stage 4 rolling blackouts, we may have to ramp it up to Stage 6, to ensure that we get power to those national key points. So that’s the other thing with the Electricity Minister, he talks and then you never see the plan or where the research is.”

ANC NEC Meets | SABC speaks to Electricity Minister on Day 2:

On Saturday, it was reported that despite the African National Congress (ANC) wish of ending rolling blackouts by the end of this year, Electricity Minister Dr Kgosientso Ramokgopa said in reality he cannot commit to that.

He was addressing the media on the sidelines of the four day ANC NEC meeting under way in Boksburg, east of Johannesburg.

The meeting discussed the electricity crisis with the country now on Stage 6 rolling blackouts.

It has come up with several interventions to secure 4500 Megawatts within the next six months and 12 000 Megawatts between six and 18 months.
