Government urges traditional leaders help combat COVID-19 pandemic

Government has called on traditional leaders to join hands in an effort to form social partnerships to combat COVID-19 pandemic in their communities.

Acting President and Deputy President David Mabuza made the call when he officially opened the National House of Traditional and Khoi-San leaders in Parliament.

He says traditional leaders have an important role to play in the fight against the pandemic in their communities.

Mabuza says, “COVID-19 is not yet over as the threat of resurgence is not yet over. That is why as social partners-we must solidify our partnership and collaboration in driving COVID-19 vaccination in order to get our country back to normality. And open up the economy to reverse the loose caused by the impact of this COVID-19.”

COVID-19 stats

The National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) has reported 2 411 new COVID-19 cases in South Africa , which brings the total number of laboratory-confirmed infections to 3 667 560. This increase represents a 7.8% positivity rate.

The majority of new cases today are from Gauteng (36%), followed by Western Cape (20%). KwaZulu Natal accounted for 18%; Mpumalanga accounted for 8% and Free State accounted for 6%.

The NICD says due to the ongoing audit exercise by the National Department of Health there may be a backlog of COVID-19 mortality cases reported.

“The National Department of Health reports 40 deaths and of these, seven occurred in the past 24 – 48 hours. This brings the total fatalities to 99 018 to date,” says the NICD in a statement.

22 994 945 tests have been conducted in both the public and private sectors.
