Government urged to take mental health seriously

Reading Time: < 1 minute

A man whose brother survived the bungled Life Esidimeni transfers which cost the lives of 143 mentally ill patients has urged government to take matters of health seriously.

Sbusiso Skhakhane told the Life Esidimeni hearings on Thursday that his brother, Mduduzi’s health took a severe knock after he was moved to Rebafenye NGO in Pretoria, from Esidimeni’s Waverley facility in Germiston.

Skhakhane says he was shocked to find goats and sheep on the plot when he visited his brother at the NGO.

Mduduzi fell sick and was constantly in and out of hospital, where he even went missing for 10 days.

Skhakhane says his brother, who suffers from bipolar disorder, is now at Sterkfontein after surviving the ordeal.

The hearings will resume on Monday.
