Government urged to lower data costs

Desperate South Africans are calling on government to intervene and assist in lowering data costs to make it affordable for everyone.
With over 22-million South Africans having access to mobile devices such as cellphones, tablets and laptops. Data demand is already high and is constantly increasing – but is unaffordable for many people.
Many people flock to free wifi hotspots like those at the Union Buildings in Pretoria to access free wifi services. Two Pretoria residents express their concerns about data costs.
“Yes, they have to decrease so that everyone can afford because some don’t work and cannot afford it and they’re struggling to have data. So they have to decrease so that everyone can afford it.”
“Whether you’re working or not data is expensive to get. If you can come here even at night you will find people even parked in cars to use the data, because it is expensive to everyone, whether you have money of not. With lockdown, it’s really worse.”
