Government called upon to impose laws protecting people with albinism

The KwaZulu-Natal Albinism Society has called on Parliament and other relevant stakeholders to implement laws specific to people with albinism.

It says there are no laws that have repercussions for those who perpetrate violence, abuse and killings against people living with albinism.

Chairperson of the society Maxwell Thabethe says the prevalence of such incidents countrywide is partly due to lack of attention given to the cases.

“Our national government does not take consideration of anything that has not been raised as a motion. We feel there must be laws specifically for people with albinism. A few days ago there was a sentence given to a person who used a “K” word to a police officer and it’s a different case with albinism because when a derogative word has been used to a person with albinism nothing is done.”

“People with albinism are called monkeys, they are called izishawa, they are called Amakhalandlanzi and there is no law protecting a person with albinism against that. Even before a person is brutally murdered, a person gets ill-treated and marginalised,” says Thabethe.
