National and provincial governments are reported to have spent more than 30-billion-rand on consultants.

This despite Finance Minister, Nhlanhla Nene’s announcement that allocations for consultants would be cut.

Meanwhile, days ahead of the 2015 Budget statement, economist Ian Cruickshanks says Nene should seek to improve the efficiency of the public sector ahead of his budget speech on Wednesday.

Cruickshanks says Nene is currently struggling to reign in public expenditure. He says the Minister should ensure that he has
President Jacob Zuma’s backing in managing the country’s fiscus.
