The Association of Meat Importers and Exporters of Southern Africa (AMIE) has expressed its approval of the government’s recent decision to implement rebates on imported chicken cuts.

The Department of Trade and Industry announced the decision, offering a 30% rebate on boneless chicken cuts and a 25% rebate on bone-in cuts.

The Association of Meat Importers and Exporters of Southern Africa CEO Paul Mathews says it is positive news for chicken consumers. He emphasized the challenges faced by the local poultry industry, particularly in recovering from the impact of the avian influenza outbreak.

Mathews highlighted the significant costs associated with importing eggs from overseas, which ultimately burdens consumers with higher prices.

He says there is a need for the local poultry industry to undergo a recovery process, acknowledging the severity of the avian influenza outbreak experienced in the country.
