Gordhan invites public input on budget

Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan has invited South Africans to send tips on what they would like to see in the country’s budget. The public is also encouraged to send through tips on how growth can be made more inclusive to alleviate unemployment and poverty as well as reduce inequality.Gordhan will present the 2013 budget speech to Parliament on February 27. The tips can be sent via email to: www.treasury.gov.za or by Post to :Private Bag X115 Pretoria, 0001.Last year, the minister assured the nation that South Africa’s finances were in good health. A budget deficit of 4.6% of GDP was projected in 2012/13. He said he plans to reduce the deficit to 3.5% of GDP in 2014/15, and public debt will stabilise at about 38% of GDPThe budget last year supported job creation, with a particular focus on unemployed youth.The budget provided for personal income tax relief of R9.5 billion, with further measures to increase tax compliance.
