Parliament’s Standing Committee on Public Accounts (SCOPA) wants several people to appear before it, to gain more information regarding criminal activities at Eskom, as revealed by its former CEO Andre de Ruyter.
De Ruyter appeared before SCOPA on Wednesday to shed light on allegations he made earlier this year around corruption, criminal cartels and other financial irregularities at the State-Owned Enterprise (SOE).
However, MPs were not satisfied with his answers.
Chairperson of SCOPA Mkhuleko Hlengwa says Public Enterprises Minister Pravin Gordhan and Presidential advisor Sydney Mufamadi are first on the list.
“Before we conclude on an enquiry, next week, let’s get the board, minister and advisor, 3 May, Tuesday 9th. We get the Auditor General, Hawks, National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), National Commissioner and then we take a decision,” says Hlengwa.
Parliamentary inquiry
Meanwhile, Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) member of SCOPA, Veronica Mente says the only way to get accurate information about alleged criminal activity at Eskom, is a parliamentary inquiry.
Mente says an inquiry is needed.
“I think enquiry is best platform because conducted under legal auspice. It will force people to speak the truth. To be honest, not short circuit us and tell us anything they want to say,” she says.
Eskom’s former CEO also told MPs that there has been no recent attempt on his life. In the same interview De Ruyter spoke about the attempt on his life when his coffee was allegedly poisoned. He was asked about any recent threats to his life.
De Ruyter adds, “No, no threats made directly to me. That is something to be grateful for.”
