Public Enterprises Minister Pravin Gordhan says steps are being taken to merge South African Airways, SA Express and Mango. Speaking during a media briefing in Parliament on Thursday, Gordhan announced a new board for SA Express, saying it’s in dire straits.

It was recently reported that SAA needed over 21-billion-rand over the next three years to ensure its long-term sustainability. Gordhan says he has appointed an intervention team to deal with problems at the airline.

“We have competent people to do the work that we need to do. SA Express has had a number of failures over the last couple of weeks let alone the last couple of years, and we hope we can get this right. We also want to share that the civil aviation authority has been undertaking an investigation or inspection at SA Express and they might give their views in respect of their finding later today.”

Gordhan also announced the appointment of Phakamani Hadebe as the new Eskom CEO. Hadebe is the power utility’s former acting CEO. He was initially appointed in January for three months, pending a permanent appointment.

Gordhan said Hadebe’s experience in National Treasury made him a favourable candidate.
