Golden Highway blocked amid protests

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Authorities have advised motorists to avoid using the Golden Highway as residents of Zakariyya Park on Gauteng’s South Rand take to the streets. They are protesting against a lack of service delivery in their area.

The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department’s (JMPD) Wayne Minnaar says the residents are angry that their area has been without water for the past three days.

“Traffic is being diverted on the Golden Highway by the JMPD at the intersections to the main road of Zakariyya Park. Protestors are burning tyres, and rocks and pieces of wood and branches are on the road, so it’s not safe for motorists to drive on the golden highway near the Zakariyya Park entrance.”

Motorists can use the R554, K43 and provincial roads as alternative routes for now.

The Golden Highway was also closed in March for another protest action.
