Gloomy festive season for C Town’s Wildschut family

Reading Time: 2 minutes

The countdown to Christmas and New Year is well underway. However, Cape Town’s Wildschut family doesn’t have much to celebrate.

Their son, Faigon, died after the ambulance he was travelling in came under attack on the N2 in November.

The ambulance was en-route to a hospital after the family was involved in a car accident.

It’s been a harrowing time for Chailon Mitchell and Nicola Wildschut.

First, a car crash, then the ambulance robbed at gunpoint after a tyre burst.

Their 7-year-old was then declared brain dead and passed way.

The couple claims none of the promised assistance and counselling has materialised.

His emotional mother, Nicola Wildchut, says they are struggling to overcome the tragedy.

“No one came to us and offered us help. We are still sitting here heartbroken and what must we do? How can we go on when we didn’t get help.”

They also claim that the Emergency Medical Services have not communicated with them.

They’re also trying to understand why they’ve received an unaffordable medical bill from a state-funded hospital.

“Everything is happening around us. They go out to other people. They reach out to other people. Why can’t they reach out to us? Why?”

The Provincial Health Department says it’s requested information from the hospital regarding the bill, and the head social worker is to schedule a follow-up meeting.

However, for the bereaved parents, getting through the day remains a challenge.
