Global new COVID-19 cases down 16 percent in past week: WHO

The global number of new COVID-19 cases and deaths decreased by 16% and 10%, respectively, compared with the numbers reported during the previous week, according to a World Health Organisation (WHO) report released on Tuesday.

Across the six WHO regions, over 10 million new cases and over 60 000 new deaths were reported during the week from February 21 to 27. By the end of the week, over 433 million confirmed cases and over 5.9 million deaths had been reported globally.

At the regional level, while the Western Pacific Region reported an increase of 32% in the number of new weekly cases, all other regions reported decreases.

The number decreased the most in the Eastern Mediterranean Region, where new cases declined by 34% from the previous week, followed by the Region of the Americas, the African Region, the European Region and the South-East Asia Region.

The number of new weekly deaths increased in the Western Pacific Region by 22% and the Eastern Mediterranean Region by 4%, while that of new weekly deaths decreased in the African Region by 59%, South-East Asia Region by 18%, Europe Region by 13%, and the Region of the Americas by 8%.
