Girl from Mbombela heads to flight school

Baby Mthethwa an 18 year-old girl from Nkhohlakalo Village in Kabokweni near Mbombela is about to have her dreams of becoming a pilot is about to be realised, as she will be flying to George in the Western Cape on Sunday to train as a pilot at the Flight Training College.

The training has been sponsored by the Mpumalanga Tourism and Parks Agency. Mthethwa is hoping to inspire other children who come from poor families.

She and another young boy will be employed by the agencies pilots for their conservation projects after completing their training.

Mthethwa said, “To other kids, I think it would motivate them because most of the time at school we have teachers that discourage us from becoming pilots because they measure our backgrounds and tell us it is expensive and you rather go for university because pilot is for white people.”

“For other kids I think it’s going to motivate them that you can still do it whether you are from disadvantaged family you can still do it, if you want this thing so bad,” added Mthethwa.
