Girl drowns in river near Richards Bay

A seven-year-old girl is believed to have drowned at Msunduzi River in the Sokhulu area near Richards Bay on the north coast of KwaZulu-Natal.

The girl was with friends when she experienced difficulties while trying to cross the river.

The river is known to house dangerous reptiles and mammals.

Umfolozi Local Municipality mayor Smangaliso Mgenge says search and rescue operations have begun in an attempt to find her.

He says emergency services on the scene include disaster management, KwaMbonambi Police and Police divers.

Recently in a nearby village in uMfolozi, three boys of a same family drowned in a dam.
