Gigaba, Mbete will not take up seats in Parliament

Former Minister of Home Affairs Malusi Gigaba and Speaker of the fifth Parliament, Baleka Mbete, will not take up their seats in Parliament on Wednesday.

African National Congress (ANC) spokesperson Pule Mabe has reportedly confirmed their withdrawals.

The move comes just after the ANC Parliamentary caucus held its first meeting.

Chief Justice Mogoeng Mogoeng will swear-in MPs on Wednesday.

ANC OFFICIALS CONVENED FIRST 6th PARLIAMENTARY CAUCUS MEETING

Today the National Officials of the African National Congress (ANC) convened the first meeting of the ANC’s 6th Parliamentary Caucus. The Officials were welcomed in song by a vibrant and jubilant Caucus of all ANC members deployed to the 6th Parliament.

ANC President, comrade Cyril Ramaphosa addressed the Caucus on the very important role of the Legislative Arm of the State in improving the lives of the people of South Africa through creating a better life for all as promised in our ANC election manifesto.

The President emphasised the importance for a robust and effective Caucus in formulating and passing legislation and conducting oversight over the Executive Arm of the State.

The Secretary General (SG) of the ANC, comrade Ace Magashule communicated the decision of the National Executive Committee (NEC) in so far as the leadership of Caucus and Parliament is concerned.

The Office of the Secretary General has also received and accepted notices of withdrawal from the ANC’s Parliamentary List from the former Speaker of the National Assembly Baleka Mbete and comrade Malusi Gigaba. The ANC has undertaken all the necessary formalities in relation to the replenishment of the Parliamentary List.
