Gift of the Givers founder, Dr Imtiaz Sooliman says it’s up to the media to hold those in power to account.

Sooliman was speaking on “The role and importance of independent journalism and active citizenry in a weak state”, during a fundraising dinner by the South African National Editors Forum (SANEF) on Friday night.

SANEF is celebrating 25 years of defending media freedom. Sooliman says the media must also tell the positive stories of what government does and not only the bad.

“We need responsible leaders in government and you are the ones that can hold people into account. To get leaders who can come and serve the country and not serve themselves and I’m telling you there’s a lot of good people in government. There’s a lot of them who want to do good. If you promote the good and don’t keep saying government is bad. Teach the morality, teach the ethics, look at the good, expose the bad, hold people to account,” says Sooliman.
