Generations goes off air

Reading Time: 2 minutes

SA’s longest running soapie, Generations, went off air in October 2014 after sixteen leading cast members became involved in a labour and salary dispute with the soapie’s creators.

The first episode broke its own viewership record of  an average 8.6m viewers by clocking over 10m viewers upon its return.

The dispute dragged on for weeks, resulting in the actors being fired after they failed to return to work.

The cast claimed that the broadcaster as well as the production company MMSV had failed to deliver on promises it made to them
during their strike in 2013.

The SABC then announced that local drama Skeem Saam would replace the soapie in the 8pm prime time slot until the new version of Generations returned to screen.
