Gauteng Transport Dept orders closure of Tsakane Taxi Rank

Reading Time: 2 minutes

The Gauteng Transport Department has ordered the immediate closure of Tsakane Taxi Rank east of Johannesburg following the murder of four taxi drivers earlier Wednesday.  Six others have been wounded.  Police have arrested eight security guards in connection with the shooting.  About ten firearms were also recovered.

Police say the taxi drivers had scheduled to meet with the executives of the Greater Brakpan Taxi Association to discuss taxi routes.  But they were allegedly shot by security guards hired by the association. Three taxi drivers died on the scene and one on arrival at the hospital. Spokesperson for the Gauteng Transport Department Melita Madiba says no taxis will operate from the Tsakane rank.

“No taxis will be allowed to operate from the Tsakeane Taxi Rank.  The taxi rank will remain closed until the security situation stabilises. More police officers will be sent to monitor the area,” says Madiba.
