Gauteng community patrollers claim they haven’t been paid their monthly R1 800 stipend for the last six-months.  They say they are forced to patrol dangerous areas in townships at night without any protection.

They gathered at Joubert Park in Johannesburg where they called on Gauteng Premier David Makhura to fire Community Safety MEC Sizakele Nkosi-Malobane.

They claim they were also trained as Peace Officers and were promised jobs but this has not materialised.

The MEC’s office is yet to comment.

“These people were taken for one month training for PO which is peace officers. They studied and Malobane promised to help them get jobs. They were given traffic warden certificates, now their contracts are supposed to end December. We had a meeting with her office, she never came back to us. For six months, they have not been receiving their stipend” said the patrollers spokesperson Pat Khumalo.
