Gauteng Community Safety MEC Sizakele Nkosi-Malobane says they’ve increased the number of law enforcement personnel by over 1 200 officers to strengthen capacity ahead of the Easter long weekend.

Traffic volumes are expected to start picking Thursday afternoon as people make their way to various pilgrimages and holiday destinations.

Nkosi-Malobane says last Easter Gauteng recorded close to 60% of the national road fatalities with 38 people losing their lives on the road.

She says they’ve identified four hotspots across province where law enforcement will be increased.

She says they will be focusing on drinking and driving, speeding, driver fitness and vehicle fitness.

“We will also be doing stop and searches to check if people driving cars were not involved in crimes and are wanted criminals. We will also be checking if the cars they are driving are not carrying illegal goods or involved in illegal activities.
