Gauteng Premier, David Makhura, says the province is in the grip of a COVID-19 third wave. He was speaking during the official opening of a refurbished mining hospital in Carletonville, west of Johannesburg, on Friday

The hospital, with 181 beds will be used for Covid-19 patients.

Makhura says in this week alone, the number of new Covid-19 cases has more than doubled.

On Thursday, Gauteng recorded over 1200 cases.

Makhura says many people are still not adhering to safety protocols and there’s a need to enforce restrictions to contain the spread of the virus.

He says over 100 000 healthcare workers have been vaccinated. 215 000 workers still need to be vaccinated.
