Gauteng govt identifies land to build 60 000 RDP houses

Gauteng Human Settlements MEC, Uhuru Moiloa says they’ve identified portions of land that will yield close to 60 000 housing units in the south of Johannesburg.

Moiloa was reporting back to the residents of Eldorado Park, Freedom Park, Finetown, Ennerdale and other nearby townships at the Eldorado Park Stadium on Saturday.

This follows last year’s violent protests in the area over housing. Residents again took to the streets two weeks ago, saying government was not delivering on its promises.

MEC Moiloa says the province is working with the City of Johannesburg to ensure houses are delivered through a “rapid land release” programme.

“This is the commitment we’re making; it is not a thumb suck. Technicians, technocrats are at work, with development plans, and most of them are actually complete. We’re now waiting for the city to transfer, through the power of attorney so that i can allocate finally the resources.”

“But for planning purposes, everything has been budgeted for, and we have issued here a report on progress that’s been made on each portion of land that’s been identified and the cost of planning,” says Moiloa.
