As the National Senior Certificate exams draw to a close today, the Gauteng Education Department has urged matriculants to stay focused and refrain from taking part in “pens down” parties.

The department has also appealed to owners of liquor stores and taverns not to sell alcohol to learners.

Spokesperson Steve Mabona says, “Candidates must remain focused and abstain from participating in the so-called ‘pens down’ parties because these events is where you see your Grade 12 learners celebrating the end of exams by throwing these parties, which at some point, end in a very tragic way.”
