Gauteng Education is roping in an independent legal firm to investigate how a Grade 7 female pupil from Laerskool Queenswood in Pretoria drowned during a school excursion last week. Gauteng Education MEC Matome Chiloane has recommended that an independent investigation should be conducted.

Several learners have drowned during excursions in recent years. It includes two matric pupils from Sizathina Secondary School in Dududu on the South Coast of KwaZulu-Natal, who attended an annual career exhibition at the Durban University of Technology last year.

Spokesperson for the Gauteng Education MEC Xolani Mkhwemnte says the process of appointing an independent law firm is under way.

“We are devastated by this tragic loss, we convey our sincerest condolences to the bereaved family and school community at large. We are hopeful that an independent investigation into this incident will assist to determine on what exactly occurred,” says Mkhwemnte.
