Gauteng Education Department has allocated R49 billion for the 2019/2020 financial year. 75% of the funds will be used to pay teachers and departmental staff.
Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi presented the budget in the Gauteng Legislature on Wednesday.
He says he will be prioritsing the drafting of a modern skill-based curriculum, early childhood development and improving school infrastructure.
The lion share of the budget will be taken up by salaries and wages at R37 billion.
Infrastructure development has been allocated R1.9 billion while the special school education programme will cost R3.5 billion.
Early Childhood Development, which is being migrated from Social Development Department to Education, will receive R856 million in this new financial year.
MEC Panyaza Lesufi says the programmes outlined in the budget are aimed to ensure that every learner is afforded quality education.
