The Gauteng Department of Education says that it only has 100 000 spaces remaining at it schools for grade one and eight next year. The department says that it has received over 450 000 applications in the last two weeks.
According to the department’s statistics, grade eight is more popular than grade one. There were 30 000 more applications for grade eight than grade one.
Thirty-five schools have received over 1000 applications.

The department has reiterated that it will fix the issue of parents who have been mistakenly allocated wrong reference numbers.
The online application system will close on the 22 July.
