Gauteng Community Safety MEC Sizakele Nkosi-Malobane has asked the Gauteng Legislature’s Integrity commissioner to probe whether she abused her position, following allegations that she prevented police from arresting her son.
Nkosi-Malobane allegedly threatened a female police officer and called her stupid and incompetent when she tried to arrest her son in April. It’s alleged the MEC also accused the female officer of having taken a bribe from a complainant who’d opened an assault case against the MEC’s son.
Gauteng Finance MEC Barbara Creecy made an announcement on behalf of Nkosi-Malobane in the Gauteng Legislature on Tuesday.
“The MEC has asked me to say that she understands that nobody is above the law. And she has indeed have a story to tell on incident that led to the allegations surrounding SAPS officials being threatened. However she is well aware that she cannot be judged by the jury of herself. She has asked the Integrity Commissioner to investigate whether she abused her public position in this matter.”
In a statement released by her department, Nkosi-Malobane denies threatening the police officer. She says the matter has nothing to do with her public position, but a principle regarding the treatment of victims in any criminal case. She says the Constitution affords her as MEC the same rights as any other ordinary citizens of the country.
