The ANC in Gauteng says residents of the province can trust it with their votes in the 8 May elections because it takes responsibility for its shortcomings. The party says it has registered a number of successes over the past 25 years.

Its support however, dropped to 53% in the 2014 elections and despite losing the cities of Johannesburg and Tshwane in the 2016 local government elections, the ANC believes it will now win Gauteng with an outright majority.

The party’s provincial head of elections Lebogang Maile, briefed the media at the Rand Show in Nasrec, south of Johannesburg on Friday.

“Where there were houses that were not complete, we took responsibility, we investigated. When Life Esidimeni happened, we were never defensive, we took responsibility. We even went as far as recommending the Ombudsman. We said we want the Ombudsman to look at this matter. After the Ombudsman, it was us who said we want the arbitrator. Judge Moseneke, it’s us, because we take responsibility, but we’re not saying we’re perfect.”
