Civic organisations are calling for the criminal prosecution of former MEC for Health and the ANC’s Chief Whip in Gauteng, Brian Hlongwa.

This after a report on Thursday by the Special Investigating Unit claims he is implicated in widespread corruption and financial misconduct.

The report was handed to former President Jacob Zuma in March 2017, seven years after it was commissioned. It was only released to Section27 last month and has now been made public.

The Treatment Action Campaign’s Anele Yawa says healthcare unions, trade unions and members of the public must stand together against looting and corruption.

“We will take people to the legislature of Gauteng and demand answers. If it means we must have five night vigils outside Brian Hlongwa’s house, we will do so. So that Brian Hlongwa will be able to pay back the money and after that Brian Hlongwa and all those implicated must face the full might of the law. So we are not going to rest, we are not going to moan, but we are going to mobilise and organise and embark on mass action that is going to seek to fix the broken public healthcare system in Gauteng and elsewhere in the country.”
