The chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Mineral Resources and Energy Sahlulele Luzipho says the Gas Amendment Bill will ensure that historically disadvantaged communities benefit from the gas industry.

He was speaking during a public hearing organised by the committee in Lephalale, Limpopo.

Luzipho says the bill will also protect communities against improper use of gas resources.

He says the bill also seeks to impose a fine of R2 million on those who breach regulations.

“The maximum participation of those who have been historically on the sidelines in the industry, it seeks now to bring them in. But also, it ensures that there is effective  broad based  black economic empowerment, and there is protection of environment, workplace as far as health care and safety is concerned and protection of communities against gas effects,” says Luzipho.
