Between November 2018 and May 2019, more than 2 300 murders were recorded of which the vast majority were gang-related

City of Cape Town Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, JP Smith, says incidents of gang violence have nearly doubled over the past few months.

Smith together with Western Cape Minister for Community Safety, Albert Fritz, have met with senior police officials to discuss means to boost crime fighting interventions.

Between November last year and May this year, more than 2 300 murders were recorded of which the vast majority were gang-related.

Smith says the City has set aside about half a billion rand to be spent towards fighting crime.
