Members of the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) are patrolling the streets of Vosloorus in Gauteng.  The members have been deployed to the Chris Hani Mall in the area, which was looted and vandalised this week.

The situation has been generally been calm on Thursday, as clean-up operations got under way after days of volatility.

On Wednesday, the government confirmed that it plans to deploy 25 000 more soldiers to work with the South African Police Service (SAPS) to restore order.

Initially, 2 500 SANDF personel were deployed in violence hotspot areas of Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal.

The death toll of the unrest is 72 while more than 1 000 others have been arrested.
