Free State working to resolve Mafube water contamination problem

The Department of Cooperative Governance in the Free State says it’s working closely with the Mafube Municipality to resolve the problem of water contamination.

Residents of Mafube, which includes Frankfort, have complained about the quality of water in the area.

The water is reported to have high levels of E.coli and faecal coliform.

There have also been allegations of diesel that contaminated the Wilge River which is the primary water source for Mafube residents.

Department Spokesperson Sello Dithebe says they are aware of dysfunctional water treatment plants and dilapidated infrastructure.

“We should remember that apart from the recent fuel spillage into the Vaal River system, there is a long-standing problem there of raw sewerage which is as a result of a water treatment plant. Within our jurisdiction, we are working closely with our municipalities to make sure that the plants are functional.”
