Free State teachers who excelled in various categories were honoured for their efforts in the provincial teachers awards held in Bloemfontein on Friday night.

The awards for educators started at district level.

Those who participated and done well in the provincial awards will represent the province in the National Teacher’s Awards.

The awards celebrated 18 years since inception, with the aim at recognising and rewarding the hard work educators put in in various subjects, including Mathematics and Science, among others.

The winning teachers were nominated by their colleagues.

Kedidimetse Motlakwe who was awarded for her excellence in teaching Mathematics, says: “The MEC and the principal are not there during the weekend but I am surprised and happy that today I am one of the people who have been nominated to be here. It shows my hard work has paid off.”

Mantja Majorobela was awarded for her excellence in Human Science.

She is also excited. “It means a lot I just to appreciate the Department of Education in the Free State. To me it serves as recognition to educators. Really we are working hard,” says Majorobela.

Among those who attended the awards ceremony was Rwandan High Commissioner to South Africa, Vincent Karega, who says education is important, especially for future generations.

Free State Education MEC Tate Makgoe says the future of South Africa depends on teachers.

“The most important thing about teachers’ awards is that most of our teachers work very hard on the ground. The system is that we never come back to them and say thank you very much for what you are doing. So the department has developed a programme to say thank you to teachers.”

Makgoe says he expects Free State schools to maintain their number one spot in the matric results for 2017.
