Free State Stars soccer fans and administrators gathered on Thursday for a memorial service to honour midfielder Sinethemba Jantjie.

The shocking news of 30-year-old Jantjie’s death spread quickly on Monday morning, after he died in a car crash in Bethlehem.

Tributes poured in from all over the country and on Thursday those who knew and loved him, came in their numbers to pay homage to him.

Free State Stars managing director Rantsi Mokoena says:”We are sad as Free State Stars to lose one of our promising midfielders. But we have to move as the team to find a replacement.”

While this is a big loss for Jantjie’s family, teammates and his fans also expressed their devastation.

Free State Stars fan says:”We are sad as Free State Stars supporters. I am lost for words. Though he was Stars player he was our family may his soul rest in peace.”

The Premier Soccer League has in the meantime encouraged soccer players to be responsible members of the community.

PSL COO Ronnie Schloss says:”We need to strengthen our programmes to encourage responsibility on our players outside football field.”

Jantjie will be buried at his hometown of Whittlesea in the Eastern Cape on Saturday.
