Free State Stars are trying to avoid relegation from the PSL.

Premier Soccer League log leaders, Mamelodi Sundowns have an opportunity to stretch their lead when they take on Free State Stars at Loftus Versfeld on Wednesday. However, it will not be smooth sailing, as “Ea La Koto” are looking to consolidate their top five position in the league.

Sundowns are on fire, in their last three matches they won two and drew one. A win for Sundowns against Free State Stars would mean that they increase their points to 41. They are currently at the summit of the PSL, and lead second-placed Kaizer Chiefs by four points.

Free State Stars, on the other hand, are regarded as the dark horses of this year’s premiership title. Since Coach Luc Eymael joined them last year, the team has undergone transformation and their play has improved.

Eymael says it is a numbers game. “Mamelodi Sundowns will be another tough game; you know it now remains ten cup games. I told you at the beginning everyone was laughing to try and put the team in the top eight. We are mathematically safe, next what we will try and get is to be in the top eight and ten for that I think we have to take nine points or ten points; we will be in the top eight. So we have to take these points at home and also away, we have to do our best away. We will face the former champions of Africa, a very good team with very good coach, very good potential.”

The last time Free State Stars beat Mamelodi Sundowns was in 2010, with a 2-1 score-line. This time around, Stars are six points adrift of the log leaders, and a win for the Bethlehem-based team would throw the title race wide open.
