The Free State Department of Health is concerned with the rapid rise of COVID-19 daily infections in the province driven by the Omicron variant.

The Omicron variant is far more transmissible compared to previous variants, but it is not certain at this stage whether it makes people sicker.

In the last 24 hours, the province has recorded over 600 infections.

Provincial Health Spokesperson, Mondli Mvambi says the latest numbers will put pressure on hospitals.

“We are asking members of the community please take good care of yourself. The projected 4th wave of infections seems to be nearing our side earlier than expected, with Omicron as the emerging variant also rearing its ugly head. We are asking for healthcare workers and working professionals to get vaccinated,” says Mvambi.
