The Free State Education Department is confident of an improved performance as it prepares its matric learners ahead of the 2022 final exams.

Last year, the province managed to achieve an 85.7% matric pass rate.

The province has 45 000 matric candidates with 6000 part-time learners who will sit for this year’s finals.

The provincial Education Department spokesperson Howard Ndaba says: “Our target still remains 90% pass rate and 40% bachelors and we are confident that if you look at last year, where we are coming from devastating COVID-19 pandemic, we managed to obtain 85.7% pass rate.”

Last week, the South African Democratic Teachers Union (SADTU) in Bloemfontein urged the Free State Department of Education to intensify efforts to improve infrastructure in schools if it wants to have quality education.

The union said this during the Education Department’s lekgotla on school infrastructure in Bloemfontein.

The Infrastructure Lekgotla was aimed at developing the department’s strategic infrastructure plan for the next five years.

Some of the pressing issues on the programme included upgrading sanitation facilities, building schools that are equipped with ICT facilities and capabilities, as well as the building of 52 technical schools in the province.
